Volunteering in Southland: The Heartbeat of Murihiku

Volunteering in Southland

In the quiet corners of Southland, deeply embedded within our close-knit communities, lies a spirit of generosity that defines our region. Southlanders have long been renowned for their compassion and willingness to lend a helping hand, and today, volunteering remains a cornerstone of everyday life in Murihiku.

Countless community organisations across our rohe thrive solely on the dedication of volunteers. These individuals, already balancing busy lives, selflessly give their time to make a difference. Their contributions are invaluable, sustaining vital services and fostering a sense of unity that defines our community.

Over the years Community Trust South has funded hundreds of volunteer-run initiatives in Southland. We witness firsthand the transformative impact of these efforts, felt deeply in our local towns and rural communities.

One example is the Toi Tois Lions in Tokanui, Southern Southland, a beacon of volunteerism for over 40 years. Recently, Toi Toi Lions approached Community Trust South with a vision: to replace the retired St John's ambulance with a fully equipped co-response emergency vehicle. This initiative, supported by a grant, will deliver emergency capabilities to Southern Southland, enabling local nurses and first aid qualified firefighters to respond swiftly and effectively to accident and medical crises.

Paul Duffy of Toi Toi Lions reflects on the impact: "This grant gives us the opportunity to replace the local ambulance with another option that will have a larger pool of people to respond to emergency call outs, ensuring a safer and more responsive community."

To each volunteer in our midst, we extend our heartfelt gratitude. Your commitment enriches our communities and wholeheartedly contributes to our shared vision of a thriving Southland.

Together this week, we celebrate the spirit of volunteerism that continues to shape Murihiku—a testament to the enduring strength of community and the lasting difference you are making in people’s lives.

Our communities are empowered and thriving because of you.
